In April the crime book club is having a look at cozy crime. The three choices are below. You can vote in the comments, on the Facebook page or on Twitter using the #crimebookclub hashtag.
We like to be varied and I hope you’ll join us. Here are your choices;
The No. 1 Ladie’s Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
Precious Ramotswe in Botswana sits in the shade and ponders the wisdom of her cattle farmer father, observes her neighbors, and cares for employers and subjects with humor. A clinic doctor has two different personalities depending on the day of the week. A Christian sect member vanishes. A witch doctor may have the bones of a kidnapped boy in his magic kit.
Death of a Gossip (Hamish Macbeth) by M. C. Beaton
Scottish highland village cop Hamish Macbeth must find which target was provoked enough to strangle and drown nasty fat widowed tabloid reporter Jane Winters, who revealed many others’ guilty secrets. Much is from the viewpoint of a naive secretary seduced by a blue-blood playboy. Icy blond beauty, aristocratic Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, lends a hand.
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
Flavia de Luce 11 is an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. In the summer of 1950, inexplicable events strike Buckshaw, her decaying mansion home. A dead bird is on the doorstep, a postage stamp on its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man dying in the cucumber patch. His last words must save her father imprisoned for his murder.
Don’t forget we are meeting next Wednesday on Google+ Hangouts at 8 p.m. GMT to discuss The Rage by Gene Kerrigan, so you still have time to read it!
Margot Kinberg says
Oh, I’d be happy with any of these choices, Rebecca. Still, my ‘official’ vote is for the McCall Smith.
Rebecca Bradley says
Thanks Margot.

My vote goes to Flavia de Luce, purely because she is the most recent discovery out of the three for me. I’d be happy with any of the others too. I like the way you try to vary the reading/types of crime of fiction.
Rebecca Bradley says
Thanks Marina. I worry a little that trying different things will put people off but we’ll see.

Oh, I have the Alexander McCall Smith in my 746. I must try to read it next month!

Maybe if it gets picked as the book club choice you could join us for the meeting! 🙂

All three look like great books. This line from The Sweetness and the Bottom of the Pie hooked me: “Flavia de Luce 11 is an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison.”
Rebecca Bradley says
It does sound interesting doesn’t it 🙂
DJ Kirkby says
Ooooooh all of them!!! Ok I stuck the titles in a ‘hat’ and drew out The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie came out so that’s my vote.
Rebecca Bradley says
That’s one way to vote Denyse!
