On Monday the crime book club met for the first time in three months. It was so good to see everyone again and we had a great meeting. We spent ten minutes discussing the book we read earlier in the year but were unable to talk about. That was Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Sutanto. Then we moved on to this month’s book. None of This is True by Lisa Jewell.
The book was a resounding success with members, and we had lots to discuss. It was such a cleverly written book, from as early on as the title. There was even a fantastic prologue that many of us had forgotten about as we delved into the story. You can watch the meeting below, but be aware it does contain important spoilers.
This month the theme is legal thrillers. The meeting is Monday 24th June at 8 p.m. BST. If you have not yet joined the book club you can find all details HERE.
For now, all you have to do is choose the book we’re reading. Check out the books/blurbs below and vote by leaving your choice in a comment by the end of Saturday 1st June. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting!
No Further Questions by Gillian McAllister
The police say she’s guilty.
She insists she’s innocent.
She’s your sister.
You loved her.
You trusted her.
But they say she killed your child.
Who do you believe?
Miracle Creek by Angie Kim
In rural Miracle Creek, Virginia, Young and Pak Yoo run an experimental medical treatment device known as the Miracle Submarine. A pressurized oxygen chamber that patients enter for therapeutic “dives,” it’s also a repository of hopes and dreams: the dream of a mom that her child can be like other kids; the dream of a young doctor desperate to cure his infertility and save his marriage; the dream of the Yoos themselves, Korean immigrants who have come to the United States so their teenage daughter can have a better life.
When the oxygen chamber mysteriously explodes, killing two people, all these dreams shatter with it, and the ensuing murder trial uncovers imaginable secrets and lies.
The Holdout by Graham Moore
One jury member changed the verdict. What if she was wrong?
It was the most sensational case of the decade.
Fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar fortune, vanishes on her way home from school. Her teacher, Bobby Nock, is the prime suspect. It’s an open and shut case for the prosecution, and a quick conviction seems all but guaranteed.
Until Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury, persuades the rest of the jurors to vote not guilty: a controversial decision that will change all of their lives forever.
Ten years later, one of the jurors is found dead, and Maya is the prime suspect.
The real killer could be any of the other ten jurors. Is Maya being forced to pay the price for her decision all those years ago?
Her Deadly Game by Robert Dugoni
Keera Duggan was building a solid reputation as a Seattle prosecutor, until her romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly. For the competitive former chess prodigy, returning to her family’s failing criminal defense law firm to work for her father is the best shot she has. With the right moves, she hopes to restore the family’s reputation, her relationship with her father, and her career.
Keera’s chance to play in the big leagues comes when she’s retained by Vince LaRussa, an investment adviser accused of murdering his wealthy wife. There’s little hard evidence against him, but considering the couple’s impending and potentially nasty divorce, LaRussa faces life in prison. The prosecutor is equally challenging: Miller Ambrose, Keera’s former lover, who’s eager to destroy her in court on her first homicide defense.
As Keera and her team follow the evidence, they uncover a complicated and deadly game that’s more than Keera bargained for. When shocking information turns the case upside down, Keera must decide between her duty to her client, her family’s legacy, and her own future.
While Justice Sleeps by Stacy Abrams
Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together–excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family. When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn–the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases–has slipped into a coma, Avery’s life turns upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court–a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field. She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington.
As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn. She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm’s way in order to find the truth.

“so losing capitals makes it look more like it’s coming from a friend/human”. Thanks, I didn’t know that. Very sad though: it shows that alas that standards of most humans HAVE slipped!
I’m voting for Miracle Creek, as it’s been on my TBR for a while
I like to think it’s just an algorithm looking for reasons to not pass emails on so their customers aren’t inundated….
I will go for Angie Kim’s Miracle Creek, but I also like Robert Dugoni’s Her Deadly Game. But the other books looked interesting too!
My choices are no further questions or miracle creek
